Important Update About Starlink Standby Mode – This Could Cost You!

4/12/2026

If you’re using Starlink’s Standby Mode—or thinking about it—there’s a recent change you need to understand before it costs you big.

Starlink seems to have recently changed how Standby Mode works, completely without notice, and it’s no longer the “safe pause” option many customers believe it is.

Previously, Standby Mode allowed you to pause your service for about $5/month and resume it later without issue. But now, that’s not always the case.

If your area becomes full while your system is in Standby Mode, you may be required to pay a demand surcharge—reported as high as $1,500—just to turn your service back on.

In one real-world example, a customer attempted to resume service after using Standby Mode and was unexpectedly hit with a massive reactivation fee. This was not clearly communicated when she signed up, and it completely changed the value of using Standby Mode.

What This Means for You

  • Standby Mode does NOT guarantee you can resume service at normal pricing
  • You could lose your “spot” in your area
  • You may face large fees—or be unable to reactivate at all

Who Should Be Concerned

  • Seasonal users (cabins, vacation homes)
  • Customers using Starlink as backup internet
  • Anyone trying to save money by pausing service

Our Recommendation

Before switching to Standby Mode, understand the risk. In many cases, keeping your service active may be the safer and more affordable option compared to losing access or paying a large reactivation fee later.
